Terns, sometimes called sea swallows, are birds with long wings and graceful flight. The Common Tern inhabits both coastal areas and inland, in a wide variety of habitats. Inland, it is associated with rivers and lakes. On the coast, it prefers to nest on rocky islets, but also on beaches and at the edges of marshes. It feeds on small fish, which it catches by diving spectacularly into the water.
It nests in colonies or in isolated pairs. The nest is established on the ground. The female lays 2 or 3 eggs. Incubation lasts between 22 and 26 days. The young remain in the nest for a little over three weeks.
