The little tern is a protected species under high surveillance.
Present from the end of March to the end of September, terns settle in colonies and dig their nests in the sand, on the banks of the Loire not attached to the bank, precarious and fragile environments. The risks of disturbance are significant, most of it linked to human activities. These very shy birds easily abandon their nests if one approaches them too closely and too frequently. Added to this are natural risks such as floods and climatic hazards, which can, from one day to the next, submerge an entire colony.
