The spoonbill is easily recognizable even in flight, thanks to its long beak and outstretched neck. The spoonbill inhabits large coastal and inland wetlands. It requires large, shallow open waters to feed. It nests in colonies. It is most often arboreal, although locally it resorts to nesting in reed beds.

It is most often observed in groups in shallow waters. While moving blindly, sometimes quickly, they search the mud with their beaks in horizontal sweeping movements from left to right. Fishing in groups is probably more efficient and productive.
