The Emperor Penguin is found exclusively on the Antarctic continent, with the exception of the peninsula.
With outside temperatures reaching -50°C and water temperatures dropping below 0°C, the bird is exposed to the most hostile climatic conditions on Earth, where no other animal can evolve.
It is the only penguin species that breeds in the southern winter, when strong winds blow at up to 200 km/h and it is almost permanently dark.
The pair does not build a nest: the female lays a single egg on her feet and gently transfers it to the male's feet so that her clutch does not come into contact with the snow and ice.
The egg, and then the hatchling, must always remain on the legs of the adult incubating it. If they come into contact with ice, they freeze instantly.
In 2016, 2017 and 2018, at the Halley colony, the largest in the world, the ice on which penguin pairs raise their young gave way, causing the disappearance of almost all the chicks.
