The Little Egret is a common gregarious species. It is most often found in the immediate vicinity of the waters where it comes to fish, usually in small groups.

It actively searches for prey in shallow water, moving quickly across the water, without fanning its wings to attract them as other species do, but simply opening them slightly in certain circumstances to reduce the sun's glare. However, it can flick the bottom of one leg to flush out buried prey, which it then captures with a quick peck. It also makes hurried runs in pursuit of certain very mobile prey.
Between fishing sessions, they rest in groups, either on the ground in an open environment, in the middle of a field or marsh for example, or perched in a grove or forest edge close to the water.
