The pied avocet is found in coastal marshes and nests on small sandbanks. It is found on the islands of Ré, Noirmoutier, in the Bay of Somme, in the Mediterranean, etc.
It mainly consumes aquatic insects, worms, and small crustaceans living in brackish water. The Avocet searches for food in the water, using its curved and very sensitive beak. Its method is original: it opens its beak slightly and skims the water surface. To do this, it maneuvers its beak back and forth from side to side while filtering the food.

The avocet is a migrant and only comes to our region for the nesting period.
